Visitors and Guests are most welcome
to check out the
club house to view the Hall of Fame with the photos of
the winners of the City of Mount Isa Open since the
inclusion of Professionals since 1974.
Past champions who have gone
onto bigger events and
can now be seen competing against the world’s best
include Peter McWhinney, Shane Tait, Craig Jones,
John Senden, Stuart Bouvier, Terry Price and
Marcus Cain.
Notable competitors who have
played the Open but did
not win include Steven Bowditch, Todd Power, Ian
Baker-Finch, Martin Pettigrew, Peter Senior, Scott
Hend, Rod Pampling, and Wayne Grady.
The course is built astride the
normally dry Silverlena
Creek, a tributary of the Leichhardt River, but the water
course allows for the growth of very large and sturdy
gum trees which are quite picturesque and majestic.
A vast amount of various bird
life including colourful lorikeets, sulphur crested cockatoos,
pink-and-grey galahs
and parrots along with flocks of ibis inhabit this quiet
sanctuary year round.
Kangaroos and wallabies can be
spotted on the red
hills surrounding the course and in the evenings
they
will make their way to the fairways to do
their best
to try to devour the lush soft grasses that
the golfers
treasure.
Also in the clubhouse the large plaques that house historical information including
the past presidents,
captains, champions in numerous events and achievers
of holes-in-one provide interesting reading for the
golfing enthusiasts.
Photographs and trophies of past
eras where the original founders and constructors of this
magnificent course are identified will enthrall viewers who
marvel at
the perseverance of these people who managed to
alter the environment by improving and not destroying it to suit the thousands
of competition and social players
each year.
Mount Isa claims Greg Norman
as its home town boy, as Norman was born here and spent his
early
days in
the city.
